Our story

Rooted in Africa.
United in song.

Stimme Afrikas brings African culture, spirituality, and community to life through voices, rhythm, and movement—right from the heart of Gießen.

Where it began

A moment of inspiration became a lasting community.

The idea for Stimme Afrikas began at a wedding in Paderborn, where founder Narcisse Ngale saw the possibility of recreating the vibrant African worship experience in Germany.

With the support of the Catholic University Community (KHG), the choir made its first official appearance in 1998 at the Bonifatiuskirche in Gießen. The name Stimme Afrikas—“Voice of Africa”—captures the purpose that has guided us ever since.

Today, members from varied cultural and religious backgrounds come together without losing the spontaneity at the heart of African music. We sing without sheet music, listen closely to one another, and let voices, drums, piano, and movement become one expression.

Supported by KHG Gießen, the choir performs publicly for the first time at the Bonifatiuskirche.

    A voice across cultures

We continue bringing people together through performances, worship, celebration, and intercultural exchange.

What moves us

More than a choir.

Music is where our heritage, faith, and friendships meet. These principles shape every rehearsal and every performance.

01

African heritage

We preserve and share the melodies, rhythms, movement, and spontaneity that make African musical traditions so alive.

02

Living community

Different stories and backgrounds find belonging here. Singing together teaches us to listen, support, and grow together.

03

Faith and exchange

Our music opens space for spiritual expression and respectful intercultural and interfaith encounters.

Performances and outreach

Music for moments that matter.

From weddings, baptisms, and memorials to cultural programmes and community events, we bring energy, warmth, and meaning to each occasion.

Our performances have taken us across Germany and Belgium. In 2007, we supported “Ärzte ohne Ferien” during NRW Day in Paderborn, helping amplify their work through music.

Talk to us about your occasion

When voices meet with openness, music becomes a language everyone can understand.
